SEOUL: A US subject has been captured as he attempted to fly out of North Korea, turning into the third American to be confined there, South Korea’s Yonhap news office detailed Sunday.
There was no quick authority affirmation of the revealed capture, which would come at a strained time in relations amongst Pyongyang and Washington.
Yonhap cited sources as saying the man, recognized just by his surname Kim, was captured last Friday at Pyongyang International Airport on out of the nation.
It said Kim, matured in his late 50s and a previous teacher at China’s Yanbian University of Science and Technology, had been included in help programs for the North.
He apparently was in the North for about a month to talk about help exercises, Yonhap said. The purpose behind his capture was vague.
South Korea’s National Intelligence Service and the unification and outside services said they couldn’t affirm the report.
In any case, the chief of a Seoul-based gathering called the World North Korea Research Center said his sources in Pyongyang had affirmed the capture.
“The reason North Korea is not saying anything yet is on the grounds that it is not finished with the examinations,” Ahn Chan-il, a previous turncoat, told AFP.
